IT support for Grand Rapids businesses that make things
West Michigan runs on manufacturing discipline. We bring the same habits to your computers, network and data: standard work, preventive maintenance, and fixing root causes instead of symptoms.
How we can help
Managed IT and help desk
Day to day, this is the part people notice.
See what's included →Cybersecurity
Most incidents that hit small businesses start one of three ways: a stolen password, a convincing invoice email, or an unpatched remote access tool.
See what's included →Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and cloud
Plenty of Grand Rapids businesses moved to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace in a hurry and never went back to configure it properly.
See what's included →Networking, Wi-Fi and firewalls
Old brick buildings near the river and converted industrial space on the west side can be hard on Wi-Fi, and so can steel racking and long runs out to a warehouse.
See what's included →Backup and disaster recovery
A backup you've never restored is a guess.
See what's included →Compliance support
We help with the IT side of the rules you operate under.
See what's included →Walk through almost any plant between Holland and Rockford and you'll see the same things: labeled bins, posted standard work, a maintenance schedule taped beside the press. Then walk into the front office and you may find a server nobody has patched since the person who set it up left, and a Wi-Fi password written on a whiteboard. That gap between the shop floor and the office is where most of our work starts.
GRapid Tech handles day-to-day IT for small and mid-sized organizations around Grand Rapids. We monitor and patch your machines, answer the help desk requests, lock down email and logins, keep backups that actually restore, and help with the compliance paperwork your customers or regulators ask for. The goal is boring IT: things that work on Monday morning because someone took care of them on Thursday.
What the West Michigan economy asks of IT
Grand Rapids earned the Furniture City name a century ago, and the office furniture makers never left: Steelcase in Grand Rapids, MillerKnoll in Zeeland, Haworth in Holland. Around them sits a deep bench of tiered suppliers, machine shops, plastics molders and finishers, many of them family-owned and many also selling into automotive. Those companies now get security questionnaires from their bigger customers, and the answers have to be true.
The other big engine is health care. Corewell Health and Trinity Health anchor the region, and the Medical Mile along Michigan Street has pulled research institutes, specialty clinics and university health programs downtown. That growth created a wide ring of independent practices, therapy clinics, home-care agencies and billing services, each with patient data to protect and little spare time to think about it.
Add Meijer in Walker, Amway in Ada, Gordon Food Service in Wyoming, the orchards of the Fruit Ridge north of the city, and an unusually long list of churches, ministries and Christian publishers, and you get an economy that is varied but practical. Most owners here want a straight answer about what something is for, what it protects against, and whether they actually need it. We try to give exactly that.
Our process
Standard builds
Every PC we set up follows the same documented configuration, so the tenth laptop behaves like the first and problems are easier to trace.
Preventive maintenance
Patching, disk health checks and backup tests happen on a schedule, the same way you'd service a CNC machine before it fails rather than after.
Root cause, not repeat tickets
If the same printer jams every week, we want to know why. Fixing the underlying problem beats closing the same request forty times.
Spend where it matters
We'd rather tell you to keep a working server another year than sell you a new one you don't need.
Questions Grand Rapids businesses ask us
We supply a larger West Michigan manufacturer and just received a cybersecurity questionnaire. Can you help?
Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons shops reach out. We go through the questions with you, find the answers that are currently 'no', and close the important gaps first, usually MFA, endpoint protection, backups and patching. Then we help you answer accurately. Overstating your controls to a customer creates more risk than admitting a gap you're actively closing.
Do you work with businesses outside the city, like in Holland or Rockford?
Yes. Monitoring, patching, help desk and security work are handled remotely, so a business in Zeeland or Byron Center is supported the same way as one on Monroe Avenue. Our service area covers the Grand Rapids metro and out to the lakeshore.
Our practice is independent but sends patients to Corewell. What does HIPAA expect from our IT?
The HIPAA Security Rule calls for administrative, physical and technical safeguards, including a documented risk analysis. On the technical side that means unique logins, encryption, audit logs and backups you can restore. We put those in place and give you documentation to support your risk analysis. Nobody can certify you as HIPAA compliant, but we can make the IT portion defensible.
Our office and our plant share one internet connection and one network. Is that a problem?
It's common in older West Michigan buildings and it's worth fixing. Machine controllers and older shop PCs often can't be updated, so they shouldn't sit on the same network as email and web browsing. We split them apart with VLANs and firewall rules, often without any new cabling.
We're a church that relies mostly on volunteers. Is managed IT overkill for us?
Not if it's sized to you. Many congregations need only a few things done well: MFA on every account, a sensible Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace setup, tidy permissions on shared files, and a backup of the membership and giving database. We can start there and leave the rest alone.
Industries we know in West Michigan
Contract manufacturers and furniture-industry suppliers
Shops that build components for the furniture and automotive trades often run ERP, CAD and machine controllers on the same network as the front office. We separate those so a phishing click in accounting can't reach the floor, and we help answer customer security questionnaires accurately. Where defense work is involved, we help you prepare for CMMC.
Medical, dental and therapy practices
Independent practices that refer patients into the Corewell and Trinity systems still carry their own HIPAA obligations. We set up encrypted devices, individual logins and tested backups of the practice management system, then help you document those safeguards for your risk analysis.
Growers, food processors and distributors
From Fruit Ridge orchards to packing and cold-storage operations in Ottawa County, harvest doesn't wait for a broken scanner or a dead label printer. We keep the shipping office, the warehouse Wi-Fi and the cloud accounting connected, and save upgrades for the slow months.
Churches, ministries and nonprofits
Grand Rapids has a rare concentration of congregations, mission agencies and faith-based publishers. They often run on volunteers, donated hardware and donor databases full of personal information. We help them put nonprofit Microsoft 365 licensing to good use, require MFA for everyone, and back up the membership and giving records.
